Evacuation Alert for Kimberley

How Does the Evacuation Alert for Kimberley Affect the 55+ BC Games?

August 17, 2018
As you may have heard, last night the Kimberley, one of our 2018 Host Cities, has been placed on Evacuation Alert due to a fire near the city. Many of you across the province are also facing similar news. In light of the fact that the 2018 55+ BC Games are being hosted in Kimberley this year, we thought it important to send you this update.

The 55+ BC Games will be starting in Kimberley and Cranbrook in approximately 3 weeks on September 11th. While it is important to be prepared and to have action plans in place, it is also important to note that a lot can happen between now and when the Games begin. Some of the steps that are currently being taken:

The Host Society and Staff are in contact with the City of Kimberley and the Regional District of the East Kootenays to keep up-to-date on the status of the fires and the evacuation alert.

The BC Seniors Games Society and the Kimberley/Cranbrook 55+ BC Games Society will be monitoring the situation closely to determine how this event may affect our games planning.

A communication plan has been put into place to alert participants and registered supporters if there are any changes to organization of the Games.

Air quality appropriateness will be monitored each day of the Games and appropriate actions taken should the conditions for play deteriorate.

As we get closer to the Games, you will be receiving more information about your sport and if there are any changes to the venues.

In the meantime, please send you thoughts and prayers to all those across the province who are in similar situations and especially to our Games partners in Kimberley. At this time, we would like to share our gratitude to all those working on the lines to fight the fires and keep us all safe. Thank you for all your efforts.

I am interested in joining the Communications group. I have had extensive experience, ranging from newspaper reporting (Sun, News Herald, Times and Province) to media and public relations with Simon Fraser University. I am an amateur athlete and have competed in several venues, including swimming, dragon boating, OC6 and OC1 paddling.
I live in Summerland, in the beautiful Okanagan Valley, just a few minutes from the launch site where I take my OC1 out on a regular basis.
